Minimally Invasive Procedures Q & A
What are minimally invasive procedures?
Minimally invasive procedures are methods of treating vascular conditions using a thin tube called a catheter that Dr. Odiete inserts into your vein.
The catheter travels along a large artery or vein from one area of your body to the treatment site. For example, Dr. Odiete might access your leg arteries through an artery in your groin. When the catheter reaches the treatment site, he can use highly specialized instruments or introduce medications to treat your vascular condition.
Peachstate Advanced Cardiac and Endovascular provides office-based minimally invasive procedures. This ensures you can access the most advanced forms of minimally invasive treatment, but with the additional benefits of convenience, affordability, and individually tailored care.
What conditions can minimally invasive procedures treat?
Minimally invasive procedures are useful for many different types of vascular conditions. Some of the problems Dr. Odiete can address using minimally invasive procedures include:
- Peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
- Atherosclerosis
- Carotid artery disease
- Renal vascular disease
- Thoracic aneurysms
- Chronic venous insufficiency
- Critical limb ischemia
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Peripheral vascular disease
- Pulmonary embolism
PACE has state-of-the-art vascular imaging systems to ensure the utmost accuracy during minimally invasive procedures.
What types of minimally invasive procedures are there?
Minimally invasive procedures available at PACE include:
Balloon angioplasty and stenting
Dr. Odiete inflates a balloon on the end of the catheter to open narrowed arteries. The stent is a mesh tube that fits inside the artery to keep it open.
Blood clot treatments
Treatment may involve the delivery of thrombolytic medication to a blood clot in a vein or artery or complete removal of a large clot.
Atherectomy
This removes plaque build-up in the artery in your legs. Peripheral vascular interventions can be done in a high-tech procedural room right in our office space as well as at the hospital. There are several different atherectomy devices available. Atherectomy devices are designed to clean out or break up blockages. Because blockages can be made of many different elements, each device is suited for a particular type of blockage. These devices are commonly referred to a “Roto-Rooter” devices.
Embolization
Embolization introduces medications or other substances that stop blood flow to areas that are affected by problems like aneurysms, tumors, or vascular malformations.
What are the benefits of minimally invasive procedures?
The benefits of minimally invasive procedures are numerous compared to the alternative, which is open surgery. These benefits include:
- Smaller incisions
- Less discomfort
- Less blood loss
- Fewer risks
- Minimal scarring
- Shorter recovery time
You only need a local or, in some cases, regional anesthetic when you undergo a minimally invasive procedure rather than the general anesthetic you’d need for open surgery.
The procedure is far less stressful for your heart and could be suitable for patients who are too sick or have too high a risk of complications to undergo open surgery.
