Weakness in your legs, when to seek help

Nerve damage to the peripheral nervous system, which connects the nerves from your central nervous system to the rest of your body, is known as peripheral neuropathy.

 

Injury, infection, and a variety of medical diseases, such as diabetes (diabetic neuropathy) and hypothyroidism, can all cause it.

 

Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet is the most common symptom, although it can extend to other regions of the body. Other signs and symptoms include:

 

trouble walking weakness discomfort that gets worse at night burning or freezing feeling shooting or electric-like pain

The treatment for nerve injury is determined by the cause of the damage, and it may begin with the treatment of an underlying ailment. There are other prescription drugs and various therapy available.

When should you see a doctor?

Leg weakness should always be assessed by a doctor since it might be the result of a significant underlying problem that has to be treated.

 

If you're experiencing any of the following symptoms, get immediate medical attention:

 

A sudden, acute pain in your back or leg accompanies your weakness.

You lose control of your bladder or bowels.

Any warning indications of a stroke are experienced by you or someone else.

Last but not least

A sudden onset of leg weakness might indicate a significant medical problem, such as a stroke. If you're not sure what's wrong, go to the nearest emergency room or dial 911.

 

Leg weakness or trouble walking might also be caused by other disorders. If you have leg weakness, numbness or tingling, or changes in how you walk, see your doctor as soon as possible.
